CMS will soon be contacting beneficiaries directly by phone to conduct the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS). MCBS is a continuous, multipurpose survey of a nationally representative sample of the Medicare population, conducted by the Office of Enterprise Data and Analytics (OEDA) of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through a contract with NORC at the University of Chicago. 

 

Due to the current pandemic, the contact process has been revised and no longer includes an in-person interview. Normally the beneficiary will get an advance letter, and then an interviewer will come to the door to schedule an interview.  Due to the pandemic, the letter will be followed by a phone call to schedule a telephone interview. The interview will be conducted by telephone. This is an important distinction as in normal circumstances NORC would NOT be contacting the beneficiary by telephone after the advance letter.

This survey is authorized by section 1875 (42 USC 139511) of the Social Security Act and is conducted by NORC for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The OMB Number for this survey is 0938-0568 and expires 6/30/2022.
