I wanted to send a reminder about the study we are currently conducting on BenefitsCheckUp. There is a short survey on the BCU website that asks for clients’ contact information after they complete a screening. We plan to follow up with clients who provide their contact information to find out whether they applied for and got enrolled in benefits. Clients who are interested in participating in the study can provide their email address and phone number in the online form. Of course, participating in the study is completely voluntary. For more information, please see the email below or reach out to me (lauren.popham@ncoa.org) with questions.
Thanks so much,
Lauren Popham

BCU Study
NCOA is undertaking a study to find out more about users of the BenefitsCheckUp® online screening tool. Benefits Enrollment Centers (BECs) are some of the most important users of the BenefitsCheckUp® tool, so we want to tell you more about the research we are conducting and how it might impact your use of BenefitsCheckUp®.
The study will consist of an online survey as well as telephone interviews with BenefitsCheckUp® users. During the BenefitsCheckUp® screening process, users will be asked for their contact information to participate in the study. Those who choose to participate in the study will be contacted later to complete a brief survey about BenefitsCheckUp®.
The frequently asked questions below should address any questions or concerns you or your clients may have about this exciting upcoming study NCOA is conducting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this study being done?
NCOA wants to know how BenefitsCheckUp® site visitors ultimately utilize the information they gain from the tool. We want to find out if site visitors apply for and enroll in the benefits they screen eligible for, and if not, why not. This will help NCOA not only measure the impact of the BenefitsCheckUp® tool, but also explore ways we can improve the tool in the future.
Who is conducting this study?
NCOA has contracted with RTI International to conduct this study. RTI International is a nonprofit research company with over 50 years of experience conducting research. To find out more, you can visit: http://www.rti.org
Will this impact how I use the BenefitsCheckUp® tool?
For the most part, BECs staff will use the BenefitsCheckUp® tool as they always have. However, prior to receiving the results of the pre-screener, you may be presented with an invitation to participate in the study. If you are completing the screening for a client, you can read them the invitation and if they would like to participate, you will enter the client’s e-mail address and/or telephone number. After accepting or declining the invitation, you will be able to continue using the BenefitsCheckUp® tool as usual.
Is participation mandatory?
Participation in the study is completely voluntary. While we would like to hear the opinions and experiences of all BenefitsCheckUp® users, if someone does not wish to participate they can simply decline the invitation. Whether someone chooses to participate or not will not impact their BenefitsCheckUp® results or any benefits they receive.
Will study participants be paid?
Those who choose to participate and complete the survey will receive a $10 gift card.
What information will you collect from survey participants?
The survey will ask primarily about application and enrollment in public benefits programs.
Who will have access to the information provided?
All information provided through the BenefitsCheckUp® tool and the subsequent survey will be kept completely confidential. Information will never be shared outside of the NCOA BenefitsCheckUp® team and RTI International staff working on this study.
Who do I contact if I have questions about the study?
If you have questions about the study, you can contact Lauren Popham, Researcher at NCOA at lauren.popham@ncoa.org or Ariana Napier, Project Director for RTI International at anapier@rti.org or 919-316-3499.
