Legal Skills: Legal Issue Spotting, Referrals & Intake

When: Tuesday, June 19th, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET.

Join us for NCLER’s first Legal Skills webcast training!

The Skills-Based training series is designed for non-attorney advocates, new attorneys, attorneys who are new to working with older adults, and their supervisors. Each training will provide practical tools needed to effectively represent older clients.

The first Legal Skills webcast covers legal issue spotting, intake, and referrals. Advocates who employ legal issue spotting skills are able to provide more holistic services to their clients, by recognizing the underlying causes of larger problems, and identifying systemic issues. By identifying hidden legal issues, attorneys and non-attorney advocates can better connect older adults with the legal services needed to improve health, economic security, and well-being.

This session will offer guidance and practice tips for recognizing and classifying legal issues faced by older adults, with a focus on spotting elder abuse, income issues, and health care issues. The presenters will also share best practices for intake systems and discuss developing an effective referral network.

Webcast participants will also receive practice tips and screening guides. The materials will be available at ncler.acl.gov.

Closed captioning will be available on this webcast. A link with access to the captions will be shared through GoToWebinar’s chat box shortly before the webcast start time.

Presenters:

  • Sarah Galvan, Staff Attorney, Justice in Aging
  • David Godfrey, Senior Attorney, ABA Commission on Law and Aging

NOTE: This training will be presented in a WEBCAST format to accommodate more participants. Due to the high volume of participants, computer audio will be the only option to listen to the presentation. No telephone call-in number will be provided. Please plan accordingly. Thank you.

The webcast will take place on Tuesday, June 19th, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET.
