Randy,

I have forwarded this e-mail to our BEC and Case management staff to see if they have any specific examples of how this Opioid epidemic has impacted the consumers we serve.

In regards to success in helping to address this issues.  For the past couple years we have been working with the major healthcare organization in our community, Intermountain healthcare to help address the Opioid abuse issue which is one of the top 5 priorities based on their most recent Community Needs Assessment.  We have staff and volunteers who are trained leaders for the Chronic Pain Self-management program (CPSMP) which is an evidence-based health prevention program targeted to helping individuals better manager their chronic pain.  We have also received funding from our State Health Department for expansion of the CPSMP in our service area.  One thing that is unique in regards to our approach to this program, as well as many of our other Evidence based health prevention programs, is that our sustainability plan focuses on the use of volunteers, in particular, 55+ volunteers who become certified to teach these classes in our local communities.  This past year, we also submitted a successful application to the Corporation for National and Community Service for a Retired Senior Volunteer Program.   A primary focus of the RSVP grant for our area is to provide Evidence-Based Health Prevention Programs through the recruitment of 55+ volunteer who would be trained and certified to teach one or more  evidence based health prevention program.  Chronic Pain Self-management program is included in these programs.  From my understanding we are one of the few RSVP grantees in the Nation who have taken this approach in how we utilize RSVP Volunteers.

Hopefully this helps and I will follow up if I receive any stories from my staff.

Thanks,

Subject: BEC Listserv: Opioid abuse and the impact on your BECs

Greetings BECs,

I am working closely with my fellow colleagues at NCOA to further explore the impact that opioid abuse is having on older adults, especially those who end up raising grandchildren because of this growing epidemic.

If this issue has negatively impacted your BEC clients, we would like to hear from you. How is this issue impacting your outreach, client interactions, and case management? In the same way, if you are having success in this area, we would also like to know what you are doing.

Please respond to me directly, and I will share your input with the team.

Thank you all!

~Randy
