Screen and Intervene: Addressing Food Insecurity Among Older Adults

The Food Research & Action Center and AARP Foundation have released a free online course (news release), “Screen and Intervene: Addressing Food Insecurity Among Older Adults.” In just 60 minutes, health care providers, community-based partners, and students and interns can learn how to screen patients age 50+ for  food insecurity and connect them to key nutrition resources like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps). While the course focuses on adults 50+, much of the information and many of the strategies are relevant across the lifespan. The course also includes a number of free, downloadable resources, including posters and charts that are ready to use in clinical settings. The course is approved for 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (MDs and DOs). For non-physicians seeking professional credits, many professional societies and credentialing bodies will accept the AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ as an equivalent as long as the topic is relevant to the applicant’s field or discipline. In addition, all learners can download a certificate of participation upon completion of the course. The course can be accessed at: seniorhealthandhunger.org
