Good morning BECs,
I just wanted to share a great resource for
free training if you are interested in learning more about the needs of Veterans. The Veterans Health Administration has an online training site that is free and rich with topic areas to explore! In order to take any of the online trainings, you will
need to set up an account. I created an account and it only takes a few minutes.
https://www.train.org/vha/welcome
What is great is that the trainings are recorded so you can take them any time.
Below is a training topic (with full description) I think may be very useful to the work that you do.

Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals
Military Organization and Roles
Program Release: October 1, 2015 Program
Expiration: October 1, 2018
Place: VHA TRAIN Online
Purpose Statement
Increasing numbers of health care professionals with no prior military service history or experience working with military Service Members, Veterans, or their families are being called upon to deliver patient care to these rapidly growing populations. For
current and former military Servicemembers, the explicit organizational structures and implicit ideals and values comprising military culture play a significant and lifelong role in injury, illness, and recovery. In all fields of health care, but most especially
in mental health evaluation and treatment, empathic therapeutic alliances and effective treatment plans require health care professionals to possess and utilize detailed knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding military and Veteran cultures and subcultures.
To meet this training need, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) have jointly sponsored a plan to develop and implement an online Military Culture Training Curriculum for health care professionals. The curriculum for
this training will encourage military cultural competency in health care professionals through the provision of interactive online training in the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
In this second module, the focus will be on the more visible or surface aspects of the military culture that can be observed “above the waterline”. You will gain an
understanding of how some of the more material or tangible elements of the military such as its organizational structure, contracts, occupational roles, and customs function to reinforce military ethos and culture. In other words, while many of these visible
aspects persist because of tradition, they all serve as visible manifestations of the underlying ethos.
The full course, Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals is comprised of four modules. The planning committee recommends you take all four
modules to gain the most overall insight into Military Culture. Modules 1, 3 and 4 are as follows:
• Mod 1 – Self-Awareness and Introduction to Military Ethos – item ID# 19333
• Mod 3 – Stressors and Their Impact – item ID# 19334
• Mod 4 – Treatment Resources and Tools – item ID# 19335
Target Audience
The target audience includes all VA, DoD, contractor, and private health care professionals who serve Servicemembers, Veterans, and their families. The primary audience for the curriculum is mental health professionals employed by the VA or DoD, but the curriculum
is intended to benefit any health care professional who serves members of the military, Veterans, or members of their families, regardless of setting. This includes physicians (including psychiatrists’), psychologists, nurses, social workers, and counselors.
