Hello Everyone,
I wanted to respond as an employee for the state of Maryland
and the outreach case manager to the Arc of Prince George's County
here in Maryland. I hear this all of the time from clients of many of our
partners. We (social services) employees can NOT prevent an undocumented
worker from applying for benefits. Everyone in need is open to apply. BUT,
once the application is processed, the determination will be made
as to whether the applicant is eligible for benefits based on house hold
composition, and income. But NOT their status.

However, if they are granted an interview to come in from that application
they MUST provide proof of residency, legal status, and/or proof of
refugee/ asylee status. But PLEASE encourage them to apply. Even in the
interview, we can NOT report them.

Thank you.

There is fear among immigrants that their status can be negatively affected if they are dependent on the state or social services.  Receiving $16 in Food Stamps does not indicate a dependence on the system.  I will copy Sal Espino for his comments too.  thanks.  Jerry

Subject: BEC Calming fears

We recently had a Hispanic BEC client who opted not to complete or submit a SNAP application because he was concerned about sharing personal information given the new administration and changing immigration policies. Have any other BECs experienced such apprehension from clients?

Thank you,

Christina
