We’ve begun to receive several inquiries from folks about this, and wanted to keep you in the loop regarding what we know thus far.

When the partial government shutdown began on Dec. 21, we shared information on the potential impacts on older adults. Three-quarters of the federal government already received funding, and Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits, and Older Americans Act programs are not affected.

As the shutdown continues, there is increasing concern that SNAP benefits and housing assistance could lapse starting in February, and Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) food boxes might not be available as of March. Department of Transportation senior transportation services and Justice Department elder abuse programs have not received their funding and we’re waiting to hear more about the effects on local services. Our public policy team continues to monitor negotiations between Congress and the Administration to resolve this impasse, and any news from agencies about providing services in the interim.

If you’d like to know more about the possible effect on SNAP benefits, the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities has a good resource page at: https://www.cbpp.org/research/food-assistance/millions-face-cut-in-snap-food-assistance-if-government-shutdown-continues.

For more on the impact on HUD housing benefits, see: https://www.leadingage.org/legislation/what-shutdown-would-mean-hud

We will provide updates as soon as we know more!
